藍染とは、たで科の植物である藍の葉を使用した、日本には飛鳥時代に伝わったとされている1000年以上も歴史のある手染めの方法です。藍染によって作られる独特な青色は藍色と呼ばれ日本を象徴する色です。海外では「Japan Blue(ジャパンブルー)」という名で知られています。藍染には多彩な青があります。染める回数により青の濃淡が変わり、数多くの青色を表現できます。

京黒紋付染は深みがあり気品ある上質な黒色が特徴的です。1979年から経済産業省指定伝統的工芸品に指定されている技術です。10世紀頃から1000年の歴史があり、お祝い事に着用する黒留袖や、葬儀の際に着用する喪服を黒く染める絹の染色技術で、主に京都府京都市で生産されています。

What is indigo dyeing?
